Gown Etiquette
GOWNS & ETIQUETTE:
Traditionally you would require two gowns in order to graduate.
The gown of your current status, and then the gown of your graduation degree, as in a Commoners Gown to BA Degree Gown.
Current University regulations require that all BA, UGM & Masters graduands are to wear the gown of the degree you are receiving.
You will wear this gown upon arrival at The Sheldonian Theatre.
During the ceremony a hood will be added to your attire in order for you to graduate in full within the theatre.
D’Phil graduations are different as they still require the gown of your current status. This can be as simple as your Graduate Gown (the one you wear to dinner).
Alternatively a Masters Gown & Hood can be worn if that degree was gained at Oxford. The University does not recognise gowns from other universities, therefore you can only wear an Oxford Degree Gown, or your Graduate Gown.
In short during the ceremony you will be directed to The Divinty Schools, where with our help you will be dressed in your degree hood or D’Phil gown to complete your graduation.
In addition the rules of ‘Sub-fusc’ as in black & white dress still apply to all ceremonies and presentations. No bare legs or skin coloured tights, dark suits combined with the black & white ruling.
The Proctors have the right to refuse admission if you are not suItably attired.
